Barbie has had over 120 careers in her day. From astronaut to Heidi Klum and everything in between. As the father of a young girl I’ve been pretty disappointed in the Barbie line my daughter has been exposed to in the past few years. Pop diva’s, fashion models and princesses in distress are not the kind of role models a little girl need. That of course is my not so humble and very geeky opinion. That is until Mattel launched a new campaign to pick Barbie’s next career by popular vote. The choices are Environmentalist, Architect, Surgeon, News Anchor and Computer Engineer.

That’s right there is a chance The Barbie Computer Engineer could make it on to a little girl’s wish list. This is a step in the right direction from “Math Class is tough” to “Based on the data structure we would save a few cycles implementing a radix sort in the firmware”. OK she probably won’t have that phrase but still a Barbie Computer Engineer would be cool. Who knows this could spawn a whole line of products including the Barbie Malibu Hacker Space with a miniature MakerBot.

Go place your vote at The Mattel Website and let your voice be heard, or at least let the click of your mouse be heard.
